The short answer

From 1 January 2026, the collective labor agreement regarding the wage value of a holiday day has been tightened. Merely paying the job salary may therefore be insufficient. Article 67a paragraph 10 describes which average allowances and extra hours are relevant.

vakantieloon and vakantiegeld are different payments

vakantieloon is the salary during vacation days taken. vakantiegeld is a separate annual holiday allowance. In addition to job wages, personal allowances, shift allowances and averages of certain variable remuneration may also count towards the value of a holiday day. As a result, not every net expense allowance suddenly becomes a salary. Have your employer break down the basis instead of accepting one unexplained daily amount.

Ask which reference period was used

The collective labor agreement in principle uses data from the previous calendar year for the average variable components, with an appropriate other reference period if this is not representative. For example, a start during the year may require explanation. CNV published a specific explanation about this in August 2026. The general holiday-allowance calculator does not calculate the value of a leave day.

This is how you check it

  1. Collect the number of vacation days taken and their paid daily value.
  2. Ask which fixed and variable wage components are included.
  3. Check the reference period and request an explanation of missing overtime or irregularity components.
Practical example

You normally earn regular allowances in addition to your basic salary. During holidays, only a basic daily wage is stated on the specification. This is reason to request the calculation of Article 67a; the difference with a normal working week does not in itself prove what amount is missing.

Questions about this CAO

Is holiday pay the same as holiday allowance?

No. Holiday pay is part of days off; holiday allowance is a separate monetary scheme. Check them as different payroll items.

Do overtime components automatically never count?

That's too general. The current collective labor agreement mentions average components that, under certain conditions, form part of the current value.

What if I wasn't employed last year?

Ask for an appropriate reference period and substantiation. An empty previous calendar year should not serve as a complete answer without explanation.

Will my subsistence allowance continue to be paid?

An expense allowance is not automatically holiday pay. Check the specific basis in Article 67a and keep the items separate.
