The short answer
Agency workers may build pension through StiPP or another applicable arrangement. Ask which pension provider covers your contract and when participation starts.
Identify the scheme that actually covers you
StiPP introduced a new scheme from 1 January 2026. An old explanation of its former Basic and Plus arrangements may therefore be unsuitable for a current payslip.
A percentage needs the correct calculation base
A pension contribution percentage normally applies to the pension base, not automatically to every euro of gross salary. Ask payroll for pensionable pay, the applicable franchise and the employee contribution. Distinguish your deduction from the employer’s contribution. A pension amount entered in this site’s salary calculator is an input estimate; the tool does not determine scheme membership or pension rights.
What to do next
- Find the pension provider and scheme name in your employment documents.
- Request the calculation behind the pension deduction.
- Check that the provider’s record shows your employment and contributions.
A payslip shows a pension percentage but the deduction differs from that percentage of total gross pay. The pension base may exclude a franchise or some pay components; ask for that base first.
Questions people ask
Does every agency use StiPP?
Do not assume so. Confirm the applicable provider and scheme with the employer.
Why is an explanation from 2025 different?
StiPP changed its pension arrangement from January 2026. Use information for the current scheme and work period.
Can I calculate the deduction from gross salary alone?
Not reliably. You need the applicable pension base, exclusions or franchise and employee contribution rate.
Does the employer also contribute?
Schemes can include an employer contribution separate from the employee deduction. Ask for both figures and the provider’s explanation.
What happens when I change agency?
Ask both employers which scheme applies and check your pension record. A new job does not erase previously accrued pension rights.
