Jaaropgave: reading your annual wage statement

Use the annual statement to check taxable wages, payroll tax and the figures in your Dutch income-tax return.

The short answer

A jaaropgave summarises a calendar year with one employer. It normally shows fiscal wage, withheld wage tax and national-insurance contributions, and the labour tax credit used in payroll.

Read the annual totals, not a monthly bank payment

These figures do not equal the money that reached your bank after every deduction. Keep the statement even after you leave the Netherlands or change agency.

Collect one statement from every employer

If you had several employers, compare each statement with the correct year and employer name in the prefilled tax return. Ask payroll about a missing or corrected statement. A later correction can change the figures, so avoid filing from an old copy without checking. A housing bill or the last weekly transfer is not a replacement for the annual wage record.

What to do next

  1. Check your name, employer and the calendar year.
  2. Compare fiscal wage and withheld tax with the prefilled return.
  3. Ask payroll for corrections or missing statements and retain the final version.
A practical example

You worked for Agency A until May and Agency B from June. Keep both annual statements. The last employer’s statement does not automatically include the earlier job.

Questions people ask

When do I receive a jaaropgave?

Employers usually provide it early in the following year, often in January or February. Ask payroll if you cannot find it.

Can I receive more than one?

Yes. Each employer or relevant income payer can issue its own annual statement for the same year.

Is fiscal wage the same as gross salary in my contract?

Not necessarily. The annual fiscal figure reflects payroll treatment across the year; compare the actual statement rather than multiplying the advertised salary.

What if the amount is wrong?

Ask the employer for an explanation and correction. Check any corrected statement against the tax return before submitting or amending it.

Do I still need it after leaving the country?

Yes. It can be needed for Dutch or foreign tax returns and later questions about your earnings. Keep a personal copy.
