EHIC or Dutch health insurance when you start work?

An EHIC is useful for temporary stays, but it does not by itself decide where a worker must be insured.

The short answer

The European Health Insurance Card shows entitlement to medically necessary public healthcare during a temporary stay under the applicable arrangements. It does not automatically replace Dutch basic insurance when you start working in the Netherlands. The country responsible for your social insurance depends on your work and residence situation, not the language you speak.

Separate ordinary employment from exceptions

Someone employed locally can have a different insurance obligation from a worker posted by a foreign employer with an A1 certificate. Working regularly in more than one country also needs an assessment. Ask the competent social-insurance institution or SVB when your position is unclear. Keep written decisions and tell the insurer about changes in work or residence.

What to do next

  1. Write down where you live, where you work and who employs you.
  2. Check whether an A1 or another formal insurance decision applies.
  3. Confirm the healthcare route before relying on an existing EHIC.
A practical example

A person visiting the Netherlands for a short holiday and a person moving here for a Dutch employment contract may both hold the same home-country EHIC. Their insurance obligations can still differ.

Questions people ask

Can I keep using my home-country EHIC after starting a Dutch job?

Do not assume so. Confirm which country is responsible for your insurance and whether Dutch basic insurance is required.

Does an A1 certificate cover medical bills?

An A1 establishes the applicable social-security legislation. Ask the responsible institution which healthcare documents you also need.

Does Dutch basic insurance include travel insurance?

No. Basic healthcare coverage and travel insurance serve different purposes, and overseas reimbursement can be limited.

Who can resolve uncertainty about Dutch insurance?

SVB can investigate Wlz insurance status. Your insurer can explain policy requirements using that assessment.

Is Ukrainian temporary protection the same as EHIC?

No. Temporary protection and RMO follow a separate eligibility route. Check status and coverage rather than choosing based on nationality alone.
