Living abroad and working in the Netherlands

Separate tax, social insurance and healthcare before comparing the net value of a cross-border job.

The short answer

Where income is taxed, which social-security system applies and how healthcare is arranged are related but different questions. A Dutch employer or bank account does not settle all three. Write down the countries where you actually work, including regular home-working days, as well as your residence and employer location.

Three questions need separate answers

Where income is taxed, which social-security system applies and how healthcare is arranged are related but different questions. A Dutch employer or bank account does not settle all three. Write down the countries where you actually work, including regular home-working days, as well as your residence and employer location.

Use your actual work pattern

Regular work in more than one EU country should be reported to the social-insurance institution in the country of residence. Tax treatment can also depend on treaty rules and where the work is physically performed. A standard Dutch resident salary calculator cannot provide a reliable cross-border result without these facts. Ask the competent authorities before changing your remote-working pattern.

What to do next

  1. Keep a calendar of physical workdays by country.
  2. Obtain the social-insurance assessment and relevant healthcare documents.
  3. Check tax-return duties in both countries and retain annual statements.
A practical example

You live in Belgium and commute to a Dutch workplace, then begin working from home two days each week. That change deserves a fresh assessment; the payroll address alone has not captured it.

Questions people ask

Does living abroad make my Dutch wage tax-free?

No. Taxation depends on the applicable treaty and work situation. Foreign residence alone does not establish an exemption.

Should I record home-working days?

Yes. Keep accurate dates and countries because physical work location can matter for tax and social insurance.

Can my family use my Dutch health insurance?

Family coverage has separate cross-border conditions. Check the responsible insurer and, where relevant, CAK arrangements.

Who handles work in several EU countries?

Report it to the social-insurance institution where you live. It coordinates which legislation applies.

Will the normal net calculator be accurate?

It is designed for the stated ordinary Dutch resident scenario. Cross-border payroll and insurance require a separate calculation.
