Does agency housing end when your job ends?

Check the rental agreement separately from employment and ask for a written explanation of any move-out demand.

The short answer

For labour migrants, employment and rental agreements should be separate under the applicable good-landlord rules. Losing a job does not by itself answer when a tenancy ends.

Two contracts can have different consequences

Read who the landlord is, what kind of accommodation you rent, the termination rules and whether a relevant CAO provides additional transition arrangements. Avoid assuming every housing arrangement has the same protection or move-out period.

Act before the final shift

Ask the agency and landlord to confirm in writing the claimed end date, contractual basis, rent owed, deposit and key handover. Keep documents outside the agency portal. If you face immediate loss of accommodation or a threatened lockout, contact the municipality’s landlord reporting point, a Work in NL information point or legal adviser promptly.

What to do next

  1. Obtain both the employment contract and rental agreement.
  2. Request a written basis and date for any demand to leave.
  3. Check registration, deposit, remaining costs and advice options before moving.
A practical example

An agency says your assignment ends Friday and asks for the keys that evening. The assignment message alone does not explain the legal end of the rental agreement. Request the separate housing basis and urgent advice.

Questions people ask

Does losing the job automatically cancel my tenancy?

Not necessarily. Employment and housing need separate assessment using the rental agreement and applicable law or CAO.

Can I ask for a separate rental agreement?

Labour-migrant housing rules require employment and rental arrangements to be separated. Ask for a copy you understand.

Who should explain the move-out date?

Ask both the agency and the legal landlord to identify the contractual and legal basis in writing.

What if I am threatened with immediate lockout?

Seek urgent local legal or municipal help and keep the messages. Do not rely only on an informal verbal assurance.

What happens to my deposit?

Check the tenancy end, inspection and permitted deductions separately. Keep payment and condition records for the repayment request.
