Leaving the Netherlands: registration, tax and final wages

Prepare the administrative handover so you can still receive official letters and resolve payments after departure.

The short answer

If you expect to spend more than eight months outside the Netherlands in a one-year period, the resident-registration rules generally require deregistration. The months do not need to be consecutive.

Check whether you must deregister

Follow your municipality’s process; the ordinary reporting window runs from five days before departure through the departure day. Your BSN remains valid when your record moves to the non-resident registration.

Do not cancel everything on the same assumption

Residence registration, healthcare insurance, employment and tax residence are separate questions. Confirm insurance obligations with the responsible insurer or institution, settle rent and utilities, and keep access to official correspondence. Download wage records and later obtain the annual statement. A migration-year tax return may still be needed after you leave.

What to do next

  1. Confirm deregistration requirements and provide your foreign contact address.
  2. Check final wages, leave, rent, deposit and insurance separately.
  3. Keep DigiD access and records needed for tax returns and later decisions.
A practical example

You leave in October after working for two Dutch employers. Save both employers’ details and payroll records so you can obtain the annual statements next year and complete the appropriate tax return.

Questions people ask

Do I lose my BSN when I leave?

No. Your BSN remains valid; the registration record changes. Do not apply for a second number if you later return.

Must the eight months abroad be consecutive?

No. The rule looks at the relevant one-year period, so separate periods abroad can count together.

Can I keep a Dutch briefadres while living abroad long term?

A briefadres is not a workaround for the duty to deregister when the conditions apply. Check your situation with the municipality.

Should I immediately cancel Dutch health insurance?

First confirm which country remains responsible for your coverage. Employment and cross-border circumstances can matter as well as residence.

Can I still owe a Dutch tax return?

Yes. Departure can create migration-year filing duties and later assessments. Keep your contact address and login usable.
