Can a Dutch employer pay a foreign EU IBAN?

Check payment details and recognise when a refusal may be prohibited IBAN discrimination.

The short answer

For euro payments covered by the EU SEPA rules, a qualifying account in another EU member state cannot simply be rejected because its IBAN is foreign. There can still be legitimate checks about account ownership, payment capability and correct details. Ask the payroll team for the actual reason if its form accepts only NL account numbers.

The country prefix is not the whole payment question

Resolve the payment problem with a written record

Provide the IBAN and account-holder name through the employer’s secure process. If payroll rejects it solely because of the country prefix, ask for a correction and refer to the applicable SEPA rules. Keep evidence and use DNB’s information or complaint route if the issue is not resolved. A savings account or unsuitable payment product may require a different analysis.

What to do next

  1. Confirm the account can receive the relevant euro transfer.
  2. Provide correct account-holder and IBAN details securely.
  3. Ask for a written reason for refusal and use the official complaint information if appropriate.
A practical example

Payroll says its form only permits IBANs beginning with NL. If your account is a qualifying EU payment account, ask for a manual correction rather than immediately paying to open another account.

Questions people ask

Do I always need a Dutch bank account?

Not solely because the employer is Dutch. Qualifying EU accounts are covered by the prohibition on IBAN discrimination for relevant euro payments.

Can payroll check that the account belongs to me?

Yes. A legitimate identity or payment check is different from refusing an account only because of its country prefix.

What if the online form rejects the IBAN?

Ask payroll for another secure way to provide it and request correction of the form. Keep the error and response.

Does the rule apply to every financial product?

No. Savings accounts, cards and accounts unable to receive the payment may raise different issues. Check the product and the official scope.

Where can I report suspected discrimination?

DNB provides information and a complaint route. Include the provider or employer’s reason and the relevant correspondence.
